Ocean Ranger Program Hiring Information: Alaskans Wanted!

What is an Ocean Ranger?: Ocean Rangers are Coast Guard licensed marine engineers or individuals who hold a degree in marine safety and environmental protection, or an equivalent course of study approved by the department, from an accredited maritime educational institution. Ocean Rangers use a checklist to monitor the compliance of large cruise ships with state and federal requirements pertaining to marine discharge and pollution and sanitation while the vessels are in Alaska.

The Ocean Ranger program was created in 2006 when Alaskans passed Ballot Measure 2. The Ocean Ranger program is unique to Alaska.

Minimum Requirements: Ocean Ranger employment requirements include:

  1. Current Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) or Third Assistant Engineer (3 A/E) Unlimited Horsepower or higher license issued by US Coast Guard. Or a degree in marine safety and environmental protection from an accredited maritime educational institution.
  2. For 3 A/E and higher license holders only, membership in the American Maritime Officers (AMO) union. (Crowley contracted with AMO to provide personnel.)
  3. Clean criminal background check, including but not limited to DUI, Reckless Endangerment, assaults or any offence that would prevent the individual’s entry into Canada.
  4. Sound physical condition and completion of a post-offer physical examination.
  5. Successful completion of the Ocean Ranger training class.

AMO has agreed to accept into membership any Alaska resident holding a 3 A/E Unlimited HP license or higher, and who meets the other requirements above.
